Paid EdFringe opportunity from Swiss company

Swiss company Mercimax is looking for a diverse range of Edinburgh-based professional and non-professional performers to take part in 8:8 – The Line Up which is being staged as part of EdFringe 2019.

8:8 is a performance installation that investigates what can cause people to project opinions or prejudices onto strangers. The performers will learn a set movement piece for the performance that is accommodating of all abilities.

The show will feature eight performers, who line up in front of eight audience members. The audience are then asked to form their opinion of the performers based on how they look and what they say.

The company will be made up a core team of four professional performers with eight non-professional performers who will rotate their performances in teams of four, working with the core team. All performers will be paid.

Mercimax is looking for performers who are based in Edinburgh (or who can easily commute). The company is particularly keen for applications from those who are: people of colour; identify as disabled; LGBTQI+; of any age (no upper limit) over 18.

The production is set to run for the full Fringe from Wednesday 21 July to Sunday 25 August. It lasts 25 minutes and there will be two performances a day Tue – Fri at 6.30pm and 7.15pm; with four performances on Sat/Sun at 4pm, 4.45pm, 6pm and 6.45pm.

Professional duties

The professional performers will be engaged for the full run and will receive a fee of £483 per week. Mercimax hope they will be able to assist in the warm up with the non-professional performers, support and encourage non-professional performers and potentially assist with small/basic technical duties, to help with the smooth running of the show. Experience of performing in the fringe or long performance runs is desirable.

The non-professional performers do not need to have any previous performing experience and will work in rotation, so they will only be required to perform on half the performance dates. They will receive a stipend of £50 for every weekday worked and £75 on the weekends. There will be an additional fee of £300 for attending rehearsals.

Group workshop auditions will take place in Edinburgh on Saturday 25 (2pm and 6pm) and Sunday 26 (1pm) May. Selected performers may be called back for an interview on Sunday afternoon.

Rehearsals will take place in Edinburgh on 20, 21, 27 and 28 July in the daytime. There will be two evening rehearsals between 22 and 26 July.

Anyone interested in auditioning should contact Callum Madge (cwmadge@gmail.com) by 5pm on Wednesday 8 May 2019.

Professional performers should send their performance CV and a short cover letter explaining why they would like to take part in 8:8 with the subject “8:8 professional performer”.

Non professional performers should send a short cover letter explaining why they would like to take part in 8:8, with the subject “8:8 non-professional performer”.
