Open casting call for A-Team’s In the Heights

Edinburgh based youth company, A-Team Productions has announced an open casting call for its February 2018 production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning musical In The Heights.

Auditions will take place on the weekend of Saturday 2-Sunday 3 September, 2017, at the A-Team’s two rehearsal spaces Leith Academy (Sat) and Dynamic Earth (Sun). They are open to youngsters aged between 11 and 18 years old.

Established in 2013, A-Team Productions aims to provide a free platform for approximately 35 young people aged 11-18 to stage multiple performances of a musical theatre production during a week-long run in February. Previous productions have included Ragtime, Oliver! and Sweeney Todd.

The original production of In the Heights won best musical at the 2008 Tony awards. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who went on to write Hamilton, won the Tony for best music and lyrics. Its UK premiere wasn’t until 2014 with the production by Edinburgh University Footlights.

Sean Quinn, A-Team’s chair and director of In the Heights, said that there has been a real buzz and excitement surrounding the company since announcing the February show.

He said: “This is going to be our most ambitious production yet and we urge anyone who is passionate about performing to come forward and audition. There are plenty of other activities and performance opportunities for teens in Edinburgh but I am encouraging everyone to choose Heights.

“Lin-Manuel Miranda is a gifted composer and lyricist; his work has captured the imagination of people around the Globe, including a new audience of people who have never stepped foot in a theatre. Bring on September!”

The show opens at the crack of dawn on the hottest day of summer. The show’s lead, Usnavi, opens up his tiny bodega in his neighbourhood of Washington Heights – a bustling neighbourhood where everyone knows everybody and the breeze carries the sweet sounds of three generations of music.

Usnavi dreams of returning to his native Dominican Republic. His childhood friend, Nina, has just come from her first year at Stanford with some surprising news for her parents, and, priced out of the ‘hood’, salon owner Daniela is packing up her sass and taking it to the Bronx.

But when Usnavi discovers he has sold a winning lottery ticket worth $96,000, everyone on the block gets a dose of what it means to be home…

Auditionees need attend only one of the two dates. Anyone wishing to take part should send an email to sean@a-teamproductions.org with their name, age and preferred audition date.

On audition day, auditionees should arrive at 9.45am to register for a 10am start. They should take plenty of water, a packed lunch and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

Everyone being considered for a principal role will be asked to attend the call back audition on the evening of Wednesday 6 of September. More information will be given on the audition day.

Prior to auditioning you must be able to commit to two rehearsals a week on Wednesday (Leith) and Sunday (Royal Mile) evenings and you must be free for show week which is Sunday 11-Saturday 17 February 2018. Rehearsals will begin on Sunday September 10, 2017.
