Peapod’s tale of terror returns

The Moonlit Road and other ghostly tales, Edinburgh-based Peapod Production’s one-man tale of terror and paranoia, is back on tour in Scotland, with a clutch of Halloween dates at Summerhall.

Launched on Halloween 2014, the show’s script is written by crime novelist Caroline Dunford and her partner Graham Gibson, from an idea from Peapod Production’s founder Philip Kingscott.

Kingscott was originally inspired by the writings of Ambrose Bierce, Edgar Allan Poe, M.R. James and Bram Stoker, which his parents used to play to him and his brother to stop them fighting on long car journeys.

Describing the show as the “hardest thing I have ever done as a performer”, Kingscott told Æ: “Usually when you’re working on a play after the first few performances it’s very easy to get into a rhythm and just stick with what feels comfortable.

“That’s not possible with this show. Every night I’m thinking about what might happen if I moved there when I did that line or if I said this bit in a particular way. It keeps the show fresh and it means that every performance is a challenge.”

Disturbing events

A young man crouches in a darkened room late one night and waits. He waits. He waits, for something terrible to come for him. His unfortunate family has witnessed many strange tales: disturbing events, skeletons in closets, things half glimpsed.

But the story which The Moonlit Road’s young narrator is about to uncover is, perhaps, the strangest and most disturbing of the lot…
