The Brunton is to start live streaming performances from National Theatre Live this winter, as part of its new season.

The screenings will be in the Brunton’s recently refurbished 496 seat Venue 1, and will start on Thursday 30 January with a live streaming of the Donmar Warehouse’s production of Coriolanus.

The production features Tom Hiddleston (Loki in The Avengers) in the title role, with Mark Gatiss (who co-created the BBC’s Sherlock in which he plays Mycroft) as the wise patrician Menenius and Birgitte Hjort Sørenson (Borgen‘s crusading reporter Katrine Fonsmark) as Virgilia, Coriolanus’ wife. Direction is by Josie Rourke, the Donmar’s artistic director.

Future productions include the NT’s production of War Horse, live from London’s West End (Thursday 27 February) and King Lear, directed by Sam Mendes – of Skyfall and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fame – with NT Shakespearean superstar Simon Russell Beale in the title role, live from the National on Thursday 1 May. Tickets will be £13 (£11 concessions).

The Brunton joins four Edinburgh cinemas which live-stream productions from various sources. The most active of these is the Cameo, which covers NT Live, RSC Live, Met Opera, Royal Opera House and the Bolshoi. Besides live screenings, the Cameo provides “encore” screenings.

Cineworld Edinburgh at Fountain Park screens RSC Live, Bolshoi Live and ROH performances, Ocean Terminal Vue screens NT Live, Royal Opera House and Met Opera and the Odeon Lothian Road screens ballet from ROH.
