Wind Resistance for Celtic Connections

Celtic Connections is to stage Karine Polwart’s Wind Resistance, the five star Edinburgh Festival hit show, at the Tron Theatre for five performances only.

The show, a co-production with the Royal Lyceum Theatre directed by Wils Wilson and with dramaturgy by David Greig, was a sell-out at the 2016 EIF from early in the run.

Described by Æ reviewer Hugh Simpson as “lyrical, intelligent and completely compelling” in his five star review, he said it was a “fascinating, thoughtful and entirely stunning piece” that is both music and theatre – and neither: existing in a category all of its own.

The solo show is constructed as a tapestry of songs and stories, with its starting point the migration of pink-footed geese from the Arctic to Fala Flow, a peatbog near Polwart’s Midlothian home. From observations about the way a skein works as a collective to shield its members from the wind, she opens up into an exploration of the environment, life, death and history.

Intrinsic in the production are Camilla Clarke’s visual design and Jeanine Byrne’s lighting, giving the show the very high production values you would expect with an EIF production. Pippa Murphy’s sound design also adds greatly, as she meshes pre-recorded sound with live music.

The performances at Celtic Connections will take place from Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 January 2017, with a matinee on the Saturday. Tickets are priced at £20.
