Choreographer for Sweet Charity sought

Edinburgh Music Theatre has put out an open call for a choreographer for its April 2019 production of the Fosse smash hit Sweet Charity.

The role carries a remuneration of £900 and will assume full choreography responsibilities for the production, starting with pre-audition planning in late August or early September 2018 and the show taking place Wed 16 to Sat 19 April 2019. Closing date for applications is Wednesday August 15 2018 at 9pm.

The show explores the chaotic love life of hopelessly romantic dance hall hostess, Charity Hope Valentine. With music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon. it was originally directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse.

Describing this as a “hugely challenging role”, EMT say: “We are eager to bring our creative energies to this bitter sweet comic musical and we need a choreographer who is able to help us realise our ambitions in putting our own unique stamp on this Fosse classic.”

Typical tasks associated with the post include, but are not limited to:

  • pre-planning activities in late August 2018/early September 2018, prior to auditions (note auditions are likely to be scheduled for late September/early October 2018), working with the Board and wider creative team to agree production planning and scheduling;
  • familiarisation of the performance venue and utilisation of the performance space;
  • auditioning for lead and ensemble roles (potentially including hosting a dance workshop for auditionees prior to main auditions);
  • design, development and implementation of choreography for all lead and ensemble pieces featured within the musical Sweet Charity;
  • working collaboratively with the wider creative team to bring your choreographic vision to life;
  • support the Director/Board on the detailed planning and scheduling of rehearsals, accounting for cast planned absences and minimising dead time/changes where reasonably practicable;
  • timeous communication with the cast on changes and/or preparation requirements;
  • ensuring the cast have all tools required in advance, e.g. choreography videos, feedback notes etc, to give sufficient time to carry out any personal learning/preparation outside of main rehearsals; and
  • ensuring availability for relevant pre-advised dates throughout the process, especially those leading up to and including the week of performance.

The role attracts a fee of circa £900, with a £200 retention bonus payable on completion of the performance run. Applicants should note that EMT is also considering applications for its Fringe 2019 production and the interview panel will be happy to informally discuss notes of interest from interviewees who are keen to be considered for this additional opportunity.

Applicants should fully familiarise themselves with essential criteria outlined in the role recruitment pack and their ability to meet these expectations before applying. Please request this pack at edinburghmusictheatre@live.com.

Closing date for applicants is  Wednesday 15 August 2018 at 9pm.

Interviews and practical assessment will take place in the week commencing August 20 2018.
