★★★★☆    Crazy for you to miss

Edinburgh Playhouse: Tue 3 – Sat 7 April 2018
Youth review by Jamie Duffy.

Crazy For You at the Edinburgh Playhouse is a show that will bring you laughter, joy, get your toes tapping and put a smile on your face!

This is a show that truly takes advantage of its cast’s skills as they aren’t all just singing and dancing on stage, but they also play the instruments for the musical numbers, which is incredibly impressive.

Tom Chambers and Charlotte Wakefield. Pic: Richard Davenport.

The scene changes are simple yet effective which make the stage feel like it is a different place with moving only a few set pieces. A highlight of the show, however, is between Tom Chambers (Bobby Child) and Neil Ditt (Bela Zangler) as they both share a highly amusing comical scene and musical number which is one so perfectly choreographed you can’t help but be impressed.

The show follows Bobby Child, a man whose dream is to dance on stage and work for Bela Zangler. Bobby is perfectly played by Tom Chambers. Tom brings charm to the role of Bobby whose dancing skills and vocals strongly shows why he is front, right and centre. Tom shows how fearless he is about jumping around the stage, off platforms and onto another one; it truly shows his skill as a performer and that’s all whilst singing and doing a tap number.

Bobby is someone who we can all feel for, as he is a regular guy who would talk first and think second in situations he feels most passionate about, and Bobby feels most passionate about trying to win the heart of Polly Baker, played by Charlotte Wakefield.

Wakefield plays Polly with such power and brings passion to her role as theatre-loving Polly. Wakefield’s singing voice truly draws every single audience member in as she sings solo in her song But Not For Me for her voice has such beauty and truly reaches out and fills the entire room.

Claire Sweeney plays the role as Irene Roth extremely well. Although her character doesn’t have the most stage time in Act 1 or Act 2, Sweeney gets to show off her skills in her song Naughty Baby.

It’s hard not to mention the incredible rest of the cast as they all just really give it everything. The harmonies on the songs are just perfect and the group tap/dance numbers truly make you feel like you are back watching a Frank Sinatra or Gene Kelly classic musical movie.

If you are a big fan of tap numbers, old classic style songs or a true musical then this is for you!
