Showman tour to play six perfs at Playhouse

Illusionist and psychological manipulator Darren Brown has added six performances at the Edinburgh Playhouse to the eight month UK tour of his latest show, Showman, with tickets to his May 2022 shows now on sale

Delayed because of the pandemic, the tour kicks off with ten postponed dates this Autumn. It restarts in March 2022 with dates at the Glasgow King’s (March 8 – 12, tickets here), Edinburgh Playhouse (May 3 – 7, tickets here) and His Majesty’s Aberdeen (May 10 – 14, tickets here), before finishing up in Northampton in October.

Having found fame on the TV with his inventive manipulations and de-bunkings, Brown is at his best live on stage. Indeed, his live shows have won him two Oliviers – for Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012) and he has received more Olivier nominations and wins than any other one-man show in theatre history.

Showman is Brown’s first brand new theatre show in six years. Announcing the new dates he said: “2022 will be the biggest tour I’ve done in 20 years. It’s exciting and daunting and I’m considering a bigger suitcase. Maybe even a four-wheeler. It’s madness and I can’t wait.”

Speaking of the show itself, before the pandemic, he said: “the heart of the show is about remembering what’s important. Like how the very things that we find most isolating in life – our fears and difficulties – actually connect us. Framed with what I think will be some extraordinary demonstrations of my voodoo.”

The resulting show will have mutated and developed over the last 18 months. Brown adds: “All I can reveal at this point is that the show will ultimately be about you, the audience member, because that’s what I find most interesting.

more than you’d expect

“There are places I’d like to take you where we haven’t been before. I always aim to have it deliver more than you’d expect. I’m excited to be at the starting point of that process. Getting it on the road will be my favourite part of the year.”

Brown’s latest book, A Book of Secrets, is published in September 2021. According to the blurb, in it “he considers the value of difficulty in our lives while reflecting on his own experiences of challenges and change. Perhaps it is in those times when we are forced to cope with adversity that we find the most meaningful rewards.

“As he navigates middle age, love and small talk, he dispenses with self-help platitudes and wonders if perhaps we need to more comfortably embrace uncertainty. Is anxiety in fact a pointer for growth?”
