EMT open call for April 2020 show

Edinburgh Music Theatre has put out an open call for performers to join the company for its April 2020 production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, to be staged at the Church Hill Theatre.

The amateur company has set up an open evening for would-be participants to find out about the show and learn some numbers from it, followed by a chance to audition for the general ensemble. It has also set dates for a one-day dance and drama workshop as well as for auditions for the principal and featured roles.

Publicity for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is based on the 1988 comedy film of the same name, itself is said to be a remake of the 1964 movie Bedtime Story. The comedy, with Michael Caine and Steve Martin, had piqued the interest of composer and lyricist David Yazbeck (The Full Monty).

The musical is set in a luxurious coastal resort on the French Riviera where Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health.

After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree a deal: first to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town…

With a book by TV writer Jeff Lane, the musical premiered on Broadway in 2005 and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards. Sophisticated, suave and silly, it features hilarious character, toe tapping numbers and great, big laughs.
