New Playhouse dates for R’n’B smash hit

Dreamgirls, the 1960s-set musical about the rise and rise of a three person R’n’B girl group, is now set to hit the Edinburgh Playhouse in April 2022 in its rescheduled tour with tickets now on general sale.

Nicole Dennis is billed to play the iconic role of Effie White in the show which was originally staged on Broadway in 1981 and made into a film with Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose in 2006. Further casting will be announced at a later date.

The production will now open at the Liverpool Empire for Christmas 2021 and is booked through to the end of 2022. It comes to Edinburgh for two weeks on Tuesday 5 April, 2022, visit His Majesties Aberdeen for two weeks from 30 August 2022 and the Glasgow King’s from Monday 10 October 2022.

The original musical won six Tony awards from 13 nominations. The original cast sound track won won a Grammy – with Jennifer Holliday winning the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, the Act 1 closer that is a hit in its own right.

Indeed, Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen’s original songs, including Listen, I Am Changing and One Night Only are so strong in their own right that reviews of the 2016 London revival said it almost sounded like a jukebox musical.

The Dreams

The Dreams are Effie, Lorrell and Deena, three talented young singers in the turbulent 1960s, a revolutionary time in American music history. The three friends embark upon a musical rollercoaster ride through a world of fame, fortune and the ruthless realities of show business, testing their friendships to the very limit.

Further casting for the Dreamgirls UK tour will be announced soon. This award winning production is directed and choreographed by Olivier and Tony Award-winning Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Mean Girls, Disney’s Aladdin and Something Rotten!), with Set and Costume Design by Tim Hatley, Lighting Design by Hugh Vanstone, Hair Design by Josh Marquette and Music Supervision by Nick Finlow.
