New associate playwright for Traverse

Award-winning playwright Rob Drummond has accepted the “surreal thrill” of joining the Traverse in the honorary post of Traverse Associate Artist.

Drummond joins a five strong team of associate artists – writers and directors who work closely with the theatre, sharing and supporting its commitment to new writing and talent development.

Drummond’s relationship with the Traverse started in 2012 when Bullet Catch was on during the fringe. The following year, his first full Trav production, Quiz Show, went on to win a CATS Award.

Speaking of his appointment, Drummond said: “When I was at University I dreamed of one day just being commissioned by the Traverse, but even that felt far-fetched. So to be asked to become an associate artist at the place is a surreal thrill.”

The Traverse’s artistic director Orla O’Loughlin said the appointment is part of the theatre’s commitment to nurturing, celebrating and providing a powerful springboard for home-grown talent.

She added: “Rob’s ambition, spirit of enquiry and sheer creativity chime perfectly with the Traverse mission to make and present the most exciting contemporary drama both at home and internationally.

“We are delighted he is joining our family of Associate Artists, and look forward to continuing our work with him on a number of thrilling projects.”

Drummond joins existing associate artists: Emma Callander, David Greig, Morna Pearson, Tim Price and Stef Smith. His show Uncanny Valley, produced by Borderline, is appearing as part of this year’s Edinburgh Science Festival.
