Forth Children’s Theatre to cast Easter show

By Thom Dibdin

Forth Children’s Theatre has secured the rights to stage Hairspray as its 2014 Easter production, and has announced that auditions for the show will take place this Sunday, 15 December.

Hairspray will run Wednesday 9 to Saturday 12 April 2014 at the Edinburgh Academy. Direction will be by Ronan Radin, who excelled with this summer’s production of Godspell and the spring 2012 production of 13 the Musical. Radin will again be joined by choreographer Katie Renton while Andrew McDivvit will MD.

The auditions are open to anyone aged 10-19 with a passion for acting, singing and dancing. All performers must become ten before opening night to audition. The auditions will be held at Trinity Academicals Rugby Club, Craighall Gardens 10am-6pm.

According to Radin: “The day will take the format of morning workshops followed by small group auditions in front of the directing team. All material will be learnt in the morning so there is no need to prepare anything in advance but please do bring lots of confidence and enthusiasm.”

Anyone auditioning should wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are suitable for doing movement in. A packed lunch is advisable, as there may not be time to go to the shops.

Celebrity

Hairspray was adapted into a stage musical in 2002 from John Waters 1988 movie. It recently toured to the Edinburgh Playhouse with Mark Benton as Edna Turnblad. It is set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, where plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show.

When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, and then launches a campaign to integrate the African American community into the show. The musical was made into a film staring John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken in 2007.

FCT has also announced that its 2014 fringe show will be Les Miserables. Direction will be by Claire Stewart, with support from MD Kerry Anne Rae and choreographer Lynne Moyes. the production will take place at Inverleith Church Hall.

Ronan Radin has asked anyone who is intending to audition for Hairspray to email fcthairspray@gmail.com so that he can keep track of numbers and help the day run smoothly.
