Forth CT to stage Once On This Island

Forth Children’s Theatre has announced its EdFringe 2019 production will be Once On This Island, with open auditions in April after its Spring production has finished.

Written by the Tony Award-winning team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime), this Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid premiered in 1990, garnering eight Tony nominations but winning none.

FCT which is celebrating its 40th anniversary year – and its 41st appearance at the Fringe – is, somewhat ironically given the title, returning to the show after a successful run in fringe of 2012.

The musical tells a story of young doomed love between peasant girl Ti Moune and the son of a rich plantation family, Daniel, on the French Antilles in the Caribbean. She’s a foundling, an orphan saved after a devastating storm. He is the eldest son of a wealthy plantation owner, a direct descendent of the original French settlers.

Unknown to Ti Moune, the gods who preside over the island have brought them together as a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, with the stake being Ti Moune’s life.

The show will run for the first week of the fringe at the Edinburgh Tabernacle, opening on Friday 2 and closing on Saturday 10 August 2019. All cast members must be aged 10 before opening night

the importance of community

The show will be directed by Alex Gordon who played Ti Moune’s adoptive father Tonton Julian in the 2012 production.

Gordon told Æ: “I chose to undertake this show for this years Fringe due to the re-ignition of my love for the piece from the recent 2017 Broadway revival, I remembered how much fun I had doing this show and the particular importance of community within the storyline.

“FCT has an incredible community that has grown over its 40 years of running, and this show celebrates it and the highlights the importance of it. The show has absolutely beautiful music which anyone could fall in love with, which I’m excited to see the cast love as well.”

FCT stages Whistle Down The Wind at Edinburgh Accademy, 10 – 13 April 2019.

Auditions will take place on Sunday 14 April 2019 at Madelvic House, 33 Granton Park Avenue. The FCT production of Whistle Down the Wind plays the Edinburgh Academy from Wed 10 to Sat 13 April.

The audition day will consist of morning workshops followed by small group auditions in front of the directing team. All material will be learnt in the morning so there is no need to prepare anything in advance.

Gordon adds: “We’re looking for enthusiastic, hard working cast members aged from 10-18. Auditions can be nerve racking but I can promise FCT brings no pressure with them and if you slip up that isn’t a problem! Just show us what you can bring and ensure that you have fun in the process.”

Auditionees should wear comfortable clothing and footwear that they can dance in and bring a packed lunch. For casting purposes, filming of auditions may take place on the day.

Rehearsals will take place on Fridays evenings and Sunday afternoons at Madelvic House. Attendance at each rehearsal is essential. There will also be some additional rehearsals for the principals in order to cover the music.
