Young cast needed for immersive performance
Edinburgh-based young company Strange Town is putting together a one-off company to help stage an immersive performance of the cult film Gregory’s Girl at Summerhall in January.
The Gregory Company will consist of 25 actors, aged between 14 and 18. The company will be helping create an immersive performance for an audience of S1 to S4 pupils, being staged with Filmhouse in partnership with Cinelive and BFI Education.
The performance of What’s The Grey Matter with Gregory will take place on January 18. It will be one of ten such stagings around the country, including two others in Scotland – at MacRobert in Stirling and Eden Court in Inverness.
For the performance, Summerhall will be dressed as Abronhill High School, a 1980s secondary school. In its science labs, biologists will deliver imaginative interactive sessions on the role that hormones play in human attraction.
The plot is that the school appears to be undergoing a rather strange outbreak of ‘flirtatiousness’ that the authorities are none too pleased with. The Department for the Investigation of Amorous Disorders (D.I.A.D.) have been called in to help us understand what is going on.

The day will culminate with a screening of Bill Forsyth’s essential teen romance. The aims of the whole thing are twofold: To enhance the audience’s understanding of the biology of attraction; and to create an “unforgettable live cinema experience that will establish an understanding and appreciation of cinema among future audiences”.
An audition workshop will take place in Edinburgh on Tuesday 10 November, 6-8pm. Successfull applicants will need to be available for six evening rehearsals (on Tuesdays November 17 & 24, December 1, 15 & 22 and on Thursday January 14) and the performance on Monday 18 January 2016, which will run 9am-3.15pm.
