Strange Town post casting call for Hibs Play

Easter Road stadium is to become a venue at the 2017 fringe, staging a new community play about the history of Hibernian Football Club.

The production is being created by Edinburgh-based Strange Town, which posted an open invitation to over-18-year-olds to take part in auditions for the play. Auditions will be on the evening of Tuesday 4 April 2017 at Easter Road where the play will run Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 August 2017.

The play is being produced by Strange Town in partnership with GameChanger – a public social partnership involving Hibernian FC, Hibernian Community Foundation and NHS Lothian.

The play has yet to be named, and is just referred to as The Hibs Play by Strange Town. According to the audition notice it will be “performed in a ‘new’ non-theatre space at Easter Road Stadium with a live choir.”

The Hibs Play is being written by Strange Town’s long-time collaborating playwright, Duncan Kidd. He works regularly with their young companies, devising and facilitation new work with them.

The company’s co-artistic director, Steve Small, is to direct. Gary Cameron, who composed the music for the Attic Collective’s Lysistrata, is writing the music and it will be designed by Katie Innes, who has recently worked with A-Team Productions on Ragtime.

The play marks a move into adult theatre for Strange Town, which is best known for its youth companies and the after school classes it runs in primary schools around Edinburgh.

Steve Small told Æ: “It could be seen as a departure for Strange Town in terms of age ranges but there will be a choir made up of secondary school pupils from Drummond Community High, Leith Academy and Trinity Academy pupils as well as several people who are either members of or in the age range of the Young Company (18-25).”

The Hibs Play will feature five male and two female actors with a playing age of early to mid twenties; two female actors with a playing age of mid-forties; and a “variety” of roles for men aged 30 to 60.
