Theatre proposals wanted for October 2020 event

Hidden Door, Edinburgh’s innovative festival which uses found spaces, has put out an open call for proposals for its theatre offering when it returns, at a mystery Edinburgh location in October 2020.

Now in its seventh year, and in what will be its fourth venue, the festival is looking for a variety of innovative work for its theatre programme with a focus on “new writing and innovative stage-based and non-stage-based productions”. The deadline for applications is 24 February, 2020.

Hidden Door’s Theatre Call Out is now live..

The Hidden Door 2020 Festival is set to run over ten days from Friday 9 to Sunday 18 October at an “as-yet undisclosed derelict site in Edinburgh”.

However, the organisers promise that the venue will be “transformed into a temporary live music venue, theatre and performance space, alongside a multitude of art exhibitions and installations”.

Previous Hidden Door festivals have taken place in the Market Street Vaults (2014), the former street lighting depot on King’s Stables Road (2015/16) and Leith Theatre (2017-19).

The volunteer-run, not-for-profit festival has applied for funding so it can offer each selected production a performance fee based on paying £120 per performance per performer/person involved in the production.

Eligibility criteria

The call-out is to any theatre practitioner or company living in the UK, at any stage in their career.

Eligibility criteria in the guidelines for theatre proposals published on the Hidden Door website state:

  • We welcome proposals for stage-based work, site-specific, or site-adaptable work, promenade and experimental formats.
  • We are looking for innovative proposals; projects which innovate or develop the practice of the company or individuals, and/or are innovative interpretive productions, or demonstrate an innovative approach.
  • We welcome proposals for scratch work, or work in various stages of development, and welcome proposals which aim to use the platform of Hidden Door to help develop the work.
  • We favour proposals for runs of shows over several days rather than one-off performances, recommending a minimum of 5 performances.

The organises add that because they are looking at various options for this year’s site, they encourage flexible proposals which could potentially work in a variety of spaces. The website and social media will be updated as more information becomes available.

Guidelines

Companies and performers should apply by Monday 24 February 2020 (11.59pm). There is no charge to apply and if more information does become available before the application deadline, those who have already submitted a proposal will be able to submit a second, amended, or different proposal.

Full guidelines for theatre proposals, including details of the selection process, what supporting material to supply and how to apply are available on the Hidden Door website.

Hidden Door has already put out a general call for visual artists (deadline January 31) and will be putting out further calls for music, dance, spoken word and film in the near future.
