Sunny Afternoon for Autumn 2016

The Olivier Award-winning musical Sunny Afternoon, based on the life and times of the Kinks, has announced a five-night run at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

The visit, in September 2016, is part of a major tour for the show, starting in Manchester in August and booked through to March 2017.

Featuring some of The Kinks’ biggest hits, including You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola, the show won Best New Musical at the Oliviers this year. It tells the story of the early life of Ray Davies and the rise to stardom of the band he formed with his brother Dave.

From the the band’s beginnings in Muswell Hill, their barnstorming debut on Top of the Pops, their infamous American tour and their triumphant comeback, Sunny Afternoon is  set against the back-drop of a Britain caught mid-swing between the conservative 50s and riotous 60s.

Here are the highs (euphoric) and lows (agonising) of one of Britain’s most iconic bands and the irresistible music that influenced generations. Not to mention the full blast of a live Kinks gig.

With a new book by Joe Penhall based on an original story by Ray Davies, the show features music and lyrics by Davies, for which he won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music, and is directed by Edward Hall.

Ticket for the Playhouse run go on general sale from 10am on Monday 14 December 2015, with tickets for ATG card holders already on sale.
