Community choir sought for Xmas show

The Lyceum is looking to recruit an amateur community choir made up of Edinburgh residents to sing carols as part of its 2019 Christmas show – An Edinburgh Christmas Carol.

Anyone wanting to take part needs to be over 18 years old, in “fine singing voice”, be able to commit to two or three rehearsals a week in October and November and be happy to sing in between seven and ten shows over the festive period.

An Edinburgh Christmas Carol

The Lyceum stresses that it is not looking for professional singers, “just people who love to sing and can hold a tune”.

There will be no need to prepare for these auditions and auditionees will not be expected to sing solo. Auditions will be held by the choir master and will involve singing through traditional carols from the show.

Participants will then be asked to sing these back as part of the full group and then split into smaller groups to sing. Auditionees should wear comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle.

The show takes inspiration from a bit of Edinburgh folklore which says that when Charles Dickens was visiting the city on a reading tour, a stroll through Greyfriars kirkyard brought him to the tombstone of one Ebenezer Scroggie, who he misread as Scrooge – and A Christmas Carol was born.

Writer and director Tony Cownie brings this famous festive story back to the city of its birth with a guest appearance from Edinburgh’s best loved Victorian – Greyfriars Bobby!

rehearsals

Those who are successful in joining the choir will be expected to commit to rehearsals during October and November 2019, these will be held across Wednesday evenings, Saturday and Sundays. They will not be expected to attend all sessions and more information will be available in September.

The rehearsals will be a chance to learn the songs, the movement on stage and to rehearse with the company’s professional actors. It is essential, however, that you are available Saturdays 16 and 23 of November for the run through and technical/dress rehearsals.

Anyone wanting to take part is reminded that performances will take place at weekends and on key Christmas dates such as 24th, 26th, 30th & 31st December. There will also be early morning and afternoon schools performances not listed below.

Auditions take place on Wednesday 25, Thursday 26 and Saturday 28 September. Details of times and how to apply are below. Further details on the Lyceum website: https://lyceum.org.uk/carol-singers
