Nick Cave & Warren Ellis’ Playhouse date
Nick Cave wreaks CARNAGE on Playhouse
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have announced an Autumn 2021 tour of the UK to promote their album Carnage, with the only Scottish date at the Edinburgh Playhouse on Monday 20 September.
Tickets for the 20 date tour go on general sale this Friday, 23 July, at 10am. It kicks off in Poole on 2 September. After Edinburgh it visits the Sage Gateshead on September 24 and concludes with two dates at the Royal Albert Hall London (October 6/7) and the Brighton Dome (October 10). Full listings and links below.
This is Cave and Ellis’ first tour as a duo, although Ellis is a long-term member of Cave’s band, The Bad Seeds, and they have composed and recorded several soundtracks together. CARNAGE is the first entire album of songs the pair have released.
Cave and Ellis say that their creative chemistry is rooted in their long history of music making, both as collaborators and as individual artists. They first crossed paths in 1993, when Ellis played violin on several songs for the Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album, Let Love In, before going on to join the band as a full-time member.
brutal but very beautiful
Carnage was recorded over a matter of weeks during lockdown. Nick Cave describes the album as a: “brutal but very beautiful record nested in a communal catastrophe.”
Warren Ellis says: “Making Carnage was an accelerated process of intense creativity. The eight songs were there in one form or another within the first two and a half days.”
The two have also recorded in Grinderman, formed in 2006, and have worked together on numerous film and TV scores.
For the tour, Cave and Ellis will be joined on stage by musician Johnny Hostile and backing singers Wendi Rose, T Jae Cole and Janet Ramus.
A tour of the full Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds band is set to tour continental Europe in June and July 2022, continuing where they were forced to leave off because of the pandemic. Full details here.
