Mollycoddlers wanted for Anatomy #20

Live art cabaret ANATOMY is shaping up for its 20th edition, to be held in June, with an open call for performances on a theme of “Mollycoddler”.

ANATOMY #20 will take place at Summerhall on June 28, 2019, and Anatomy Arts has put out an open call for “fearless” proposals of “things can be presented in a room with an audience, that are between five and thirty minutes in length, regardless of trend, style or medium.”

Anatomy #20 Callout Image

As something of an indication of their own style – if not of that of their applicants, AA suggest: “The Mollycoddler descends to consume you. All red velvet drapery and sequences of shattered wrists, the Mollycoddler swaddles you in frilly padding and pockmarks the skin with peepholes.

“Peek into the flesh of your comrades and compatriots. Marvel at the finery wrapping their innards and outards.

“The Mollycoddler comes to those bound to ornate oak posts and whose skin is a palimpsest of lipstick sigils. Hands extend from its gnashing and prancing clockwork, running fingers that smell like formaldehyde through your hair.

“Its jukebox voice scratches out pre-recorded oohs and aahs as it fusses over you, pruning your being into product: perfectly preserved mollie sapiens.”

Provocative and thrawn by nature ANATOMY is asking for tales of the Mollycoddler.

“Were you swaddled in protest or did you enter the embrace of your own will?” they ask. “Did the Mollycoddling bring peace or new worlds to explore? (You’re also allowed to completely ignore the theme if you prefer)”.

ANATOMY says that it is especially welcoming of artists who face marginalisation, including D/deaf and/or disabled people, LGBTI+ people, women, people of colour, working class people, and people from any related background or identity.

The selected acts will receive a £100 fee per performer for the performance, plus travel expenses. Rehearsal space in Summerhall will be provided, as required, with full technical support for the show and photo and film documentation of the performance.

Applicants should download an application form here and a voluntary diversity monitoring form here and return them to hello@anatomyarts.co.uk before 23:59pm precisely on Sunday 12 May 2019.
