Open call for Eusog’s March production
Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group has put out a general call to open auditions for its March production of Pirates of Penzance, the most popular of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operas.
The company promises that the production will be a very different reading of the story of young Frederic, mistakenly indentured into a piracy at an early age, then forced to choose between his pirate brothers and the family of the woman he loves.
Auditions will be held at the Pleasance on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 January, 2016, with callbacks on Sunday 17. The production will run at the Pleasance Theatre from Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 March 2016.
The company is noted for the innovative and inventive takes of the productions it stages.
In this Pirates, notable surprises are promised in the roles of Ruth – the handmaid desperate to become a pirate who made the error when Frederick was a little lad – and to Major-General Stanley, the Very model of a modern Major General whose many daughters all fall in love with the band of pirates.
Directed by Charlie Ralph, with MD Will Briant and choreographer Meera Munoz Pandaya, Eusog say: “This is The Pirates Of Penzance as you’ve never seen them before, but just as hilarious and ridiculous as ever.”
Although the company doesn’t reveal the full extent of its updating, its audition pack does warn potential applicants to: “bear in mind not to take too much influence from the portrayals in other productions as we are attempting a different reading of the story, particularly if you are considering the parts of Ruth or Major-General Stanley.”
