Desert Queen’s 2019 Edinburgh Playhouse dates

Jason Donavan is promising more glitter than ever before as he turns producer for a new touring production of musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert arriving in Edinburgh in November 2019.

The production will open in Dartford in September 2019, spending a week at the Edinburgh Playhouse in November, and continuing on in an extensive tour of the UK and Ireland, including Wimbledon, Liverpool and Manchester.

Donovan, who performed in the original West End production and two subsequent UK tours, is joining forces with co-producer Mark Goucher for the tour.

There is no indication that Donovan will be reprising the role of Tick, the Sydney drag queen at the centre of the show who has a secret wife and child back home in Alice Springs.

When Tick’s wife calls in a favour, he enlists the help of a couple of drag queens and they set off in a big pink bus – the Priscilla of the title – to cross the desert and perform in the Alice Springs casino.

Speaking of the new tour, Jason Donovan said: “Having spent years performing and always harbouring the desire to become more involved in the creative process, I am delighted to be joining Mark Goucher as producer on this wonderful show.

“Priscilla is perfect vehicle to venture into the world of producing and bringing all my experience on the show seems the logical next step. Priscilla is such a wonderful Australian story about diversity. It is a modern musical with a great heart.”

The new production, directed by Paul Kerryson, promises more glitter than ever before. It will feature costumes by Phil R Daniels and Charles Cusick Smith, be lit by Ben Cracknell and use choreography by Tom Jackson-Greaves as it struts its through its way through such dance-floor classics as It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive, I Love The Nightlife and Finally.
