Assembly Roxy seeks Scotland-based work for coming seasons

The Assembly Roxy has put out an open call for proposals from artists based in Scotland looking to make “bold new work which explores and tests the boundaries of live performance”.

The venue currently programmes work by invitation as well as being used as a hire by visiting companies. Deadline for submissions is Sunday 2 September for its Winter 2018 and Spring 2019 programmes.

It is looking for submissions from emerging Scottish and Scotland-based artists and companies at all stages of their careers who are interested in creating new work and innovative live stage productions for the winter programme (October to December 2018) and spring programme (February to April 2019).

Applications of all genres are invited. Besides theatre the programmers are looking for dance, comedy, spoken word, performance art and interdisciplinary work that intersects the boundaries between art forms and/or genres.

Two of the Roxy’s spaces are being offered as part of the open call. Roxy Upstairs is an end-on theatre stage with raked seating for up to 169 audience members. Roxy Downstairs is a more intimate end-on studio space with a raked auditorium of 60 seats. Both are equipped with modern sound and lighting systems.

Work can be fully formed or staged ‘in progress’ – although they must be in a state for public viewing. It can be made independently or part of a collaborative process created with other participants in the Roxy season (both from the Invitational and Open Submissions Programme).

Box office split

Ideally the productions will run for a period of five or six performances in a week. All productions will be subject to a 70/30 split on the net box office receipts, in favour of the artist.

Luke Holbrook, Assembly Roxy programmer said: “We are delighted to be putting out an open call for next season. At the Roxy it is our ambition to create a vibrant hub where artists can meet, collaborate and most importantly, have the opportunity to make new work

“Our Open Submissions Programming model will work alongside our Invitational Programming model and aims to complement our existing programme in ways which we hope will excite, surprise and provoke both us and our audiences, exposing us to a fuller range of artists at all stages of their careers.”

Proposals will be reviewed based on the quality and clarity of each proposal, the track record of the personnel involved, the ambition of the work and the feasibility of executing the final project.

All proposals must be submitted by Sunday 2 September. Full information is available to download at https://www.assemblyfestival.com/roxy/open-submissions.
