Six compete in the SCDA heats

The Edinburgh District round of the Scottish Community Drama Association’s one act play festival is at the Church Hill Theatre this week, with six local companies in competition.

Among the eight plays being presented, three have scripts written by members of the competing society. The festival talks place over three nights, beginning on Thursday.

Leitheatre is putting three plays forward to the competition, including Teamwork by its own member Jonathan North, which will open the proceedings on Thursday. On Friday they have The Flying Doctor by Moliere, with Michael Frayn’s Audience on Saturday.

Also on Thursday, Alan Richardson will be directing his own script with Bright Lights from the Mercators. The third play of the evening will be Erica & Me by Alan Robinson, performed by the St Serf’s Players.

Friday evening opens with the Grads staging JB Priestley’s The Rose and Crown, with Edinburgh Makars taking on Collateral Damage by Tariq Ali, Howard Brenton and Andy de la Tour as well as the Leitheatre play.

On Saturday there are only two productions, as the performances will be followed by comprehensive public adjudications and prize giving from this year’s adjudicator Keith Thompson who is an actor and director at the Barn Theatre in Hertfordshire.

The second production on Saturday will be #Likes, written and directed by Claire Wood. It is presented by a new company, Production Lines, Wood set up with some members of he Grads to stage the play in this competition.

Opening on Thursday, the festival takes place over three nights. It is the first round of the Festival which sees 150 plays in competition across Scotland. The winners from this heat go through to the Division rounds with the finals being held at the Church Hill Theatre in April.
