Demonstration 12 noon, Wed 9 March 2022

A demonstration to show solidarity with artists in Ukraine who are suffering from the Russian war against their country has been organised for noon on Wednesday March 9, 2022 at the Russian Consulate on Melville Street.

The organisers are a group of artists from Scotland who point out that Edinburgh is twinned with Kyiv, and are calling for artists and audiences to show the people and artists of Ukraine that we take notice of their plight.

The demonstration has been announced on Facebook in a post signed by David Greig, Nicola McCartney, Matthew Zajac, Jan-Bert Van Den Berg, Penny Stone and Harriet Mould.

They say that the demonstration is to shame the Russian Government over its aggression in Ukraine, to support colleague artists and the people of Ukraine, and to offer solidarity to Russian dissident artists who are speaking out against Putin’s war and regime.

They add: “As Putin’s brutal invasion, and the humanitarian tragedy in Ukraine continues to unfold, it becomes ever more difficult to watch from afar. We, as small group of artists from Scotland, felt that it was important to come together to show our solidarity with the artists and people of Ukraine.

“Russian and Ukrainian people value culture deeply. We want to use culture to shame the Russian Government; to express solidarity with our colleagues in Ukraine, and in particular those in Edinburgh’s twin city of Kyiv; and to show support for dissident Russian artists who have had the courage to stand in public against Putin’s war.”

James Robertson, Denise Mina, Matthew Zajac, Maureen Beattie, Hannah Beaton Hawryluk (Chair of The Ukrainian Club, Edinburgh), Penny Stone and The Peace Choir have been confirmed as speakers/performers.

People are urged to turn up “with banners and placards if you like and wear something yellow or blue. Bring a seasonal yellow or blue flower if you can to lay on the steps of the Russian consulate” and to bring other people with them.

The Russian Consulate is at 58 Melville Street, EH3 7HF. The demonstration is expected to run from 12 noon to 2pm.
