Review by Suzanne O’Brien

Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Captivate Theatre’s production of Sister Act at the Rose Theatre is full of soul and sparkle.

This female dominated musical is empowering, uplifting and very entertaining.

Mia Oudeh plays the lead role of cabaret singer Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses her boyfriend Curtis committing murder. For her protection Deloris is put into hiding amongst nuns in a convent – much to her dismay.

She soon accepts that she needs to be kept safe and uses her time in the convent to help the choir find their voices. Oudeh radiates talent as Deloris, with her powerful vocals and stage presence. She shows sheer determination within the role when she takes on the seemingly impossible task of getting the nuns to sing in tune.

Curtis, the murderer and club owner boyfriend, played by Max Reid, spends most of the show trying to track down Deloris to kill her and prevent her from communicating with the police. Reid successfully portrays a formidable gangster with immense arrogance, controlling everyone around him with intimidation tactics.

impressive

The vocals are outstanding from all cast members. Particularly impressive are the nuns, who are able to sustain their unique characteristics whilst singing big numbers, bringing elements of comedy and showing the great ability they each have.

The music, performed by a live band, is very loud and in your face – which is fantastic during the choir numbers. However, it does make it difficult to hear some of the dialogue and singing in parts which is unfortunate.

The Rose Street theatre space, itself a deconsecrated church with pew seating, couldn’t be more perfectly suited for this production which the cast make good use of. It helps give the piece a more real quality.

This production gives off a great energy displaying sisterhood at its finest. The young enthusiastic actors really give it there all and hold nothing back. Yet another Captivate production that doesn’t disappoint.

Amazing cast, before your very eyes a young girl transforms into a shining star and an old girl realises what matters is sisterhood.
See it and go through the emotional mangle!
