Sister Act for Edinburgh

Arrives April 2017, staring Alexandra Burke

The Curve Leicester production of Sister Act, staring Alexandra Burke as Deloris Van Cartier, has been confirmed for a fortnight at the Playhouse in April 2017.

Directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, with musical supervision and arrangements by Tony award-winning Sarah Travis, the tour opens in Leicester this July.

Burke, who won the fifth series of X Factor, was recently see in Edinburgh staring in The Bodyguard as the diva and super-singing sensation Rachel Marron (Æ Review: ★★★★☆ Rocks it).

Sister Act is based on the film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith. Burke will play disco diva Deloris Van Cartier – who witnesses a murder and is taken into protective custody.

The twist is that the only safe house that can be found is a convent. There, disguised as a nun and under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps the sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

Although Revel Horwood is best known as a judge on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, he has a string of directing and choreographing credits of big musical theatre shows under his belt, most recently Sunset Boulevard in London’s West End.

The show is a favourite of the amateur musicals scene. It was staged in February 2015 by The Bohemians (Æ Review: ★★★★☆ Heavenly heights). And will be peformed by Encore at the Brunton Musselburgh this May (Weds 11 – Sat 14).

Public sale

Sister Act will play the Edinburgh Playhouse from Monday 3 to Saturday 15 April 2017. Tickets went on sale to Playhouse Priority members today, Monday, and will go on general public sale this Thursday, 14 April 2016.

Burke will not be playing the role of Deloris in any matinee performances of the tour. It will be staged Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with  matinees at 2.30pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
