Aimed at 10 to 18 year-olds, the intensive summer youth theatre project involves around 40 young people with varying degrees of drama experience. The project runs daily, every week day, for three hours in the morning.

Now in its ninth year, the project teaches the rage of theatre skills, with participants working together to devise and write a piece of theatre which is presented to the public on the final night of the project.

Live Drama director Rebecca Kilbey said: “We start with a theme each year – but we never know where it’s going to go which is probably why it’s one of my favourite projects to work on each year.

“We’ve done a Star Trek-inspired version of Homer’s The Odyssey, a Robert Burns play set in Edinburgh Airport, a Dickens inspired maffioso piece – and, of course, last year’s Big Top Extravaganza which took as it’s starting point Scott of the Antarctic.”

The project also includes six optional workshops in the afternoons, to help participants develop different theatre skills such as improvisation, movement, mime, voice, script writing and prop making.

Kilbey added: “It’s too early to say where the project will go this year, but the plays are always challenging, great fun, creative, and very much owned by the young people who develop them.”

Live Drama is supported by the City of Edinburgh Council’s department of Children and Families and Southside Community Centre.

Cost of the full, two week morning course is £70. The optional afternoon sessions are charged at £4.50 a session.
