Sweet Venues adds to #EdFringe Offer

Edinburgh fringe operator Sweet Venues is adding “Sweet Holyrood”, based at the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel, to its offer during the 2017 fringe.

Sweet Holyrood will contain three performance spaces, together with a dedicated box office and foyer cafe bar. Sweet will continue to run Sweet Grassmarket, with four performance spaces box office and bar, in the Apex Grassmarket Hotel.

Dundee-based JD Henshaw and Annie Marrs took over Sweet Venues in 2010. Besides creating black-box theatre spaces in hotel rooms, they now also run a year-round venue in Brighton as well as multiple venues during the Brighton fringe.

JD Henshaw said, “We started out at EdFringe as performers. Just like many performers, we had some great experiences and some not so great experiences.

“I knew that we could run a venue that would offer a boutique, high quality Fringe experience appealing to the performers and audiences that travel to Edinburgh from around the world every August.

“This new partnership with Macdonald Holyrood Hotel will help us to keep doing that for an ever-increasing number of people.”

Sweet Holyrood will also be the home of a new Sweet co-production of a 250 hour interactive gaming marathon including the audience as participants and spectators.

Edinburgh-based writer and performer Michael Daviot, who staged Nosferatu’s Shadow at Sweet last year and will be staging his new play 2017 – A Phantasmagoria at Sweet Venues during EdFringe 2017 welcomed the news.

Daviot said: “Sweet are the friendliest, most enthusiastic and most supportive venue on the Fringe. I don’t get up this early for anyone else!”
