What’s on Edinburgh’s stages this week…
It’s the return of the Lyceum! About time too, we say, in a week which is also pretty strong on local amateur companies and has another bundle of catch-ups at the Playhouse and the Festival theatre.
Chess
★★★☆☆ Re-opening gambit
Musselburgh Amateur Musicals Association make a spirited return to live with a production of Chess at the Brunton which hits all the high and the low notes while making a solid fist of the tricky ones in between.
Rapunzel: The Pantomime
★★★★★ Towering achievement
The Brunton’s panto is a little different this year – Oh yes it is! Covid means the Brunton’s 2020 offering was filmed, with smaller audiences able to watch Rapunzel in the venue’s cinema. As it turned out, tier changes meant that plan was abandoned, but a web link ensures kids of all ages don’t have to miss out.

The Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh is determined to put on panto this year, so has created a film version of Rapunzel The Pantomime, screening in its cinema over Christmas – and available to stream online
Brunton Postpones Panto
Aladdin takes magic carpet to 2021:
The Brunton Theatre has announced that its planned 2020 pantomime, Aladdin, will now take place in 2021 due to social distancing measures because of Covid-19.
Jack and the Beanstalk

There’s a happy ending, beginning and indeed, middle, as Jack and the Beanstalk gets a Musselburgh makeover at the Brunton theatre this festive season.

On stage this week:
There is plenty of great theatre on Edinburgh’s stages this week, with the Lyceum’s fabulous Twelfth Night just hitting its stride for week two (of three), McLuckies Line touring to the Brunton and Assembly, and the King’s hosting the tour of Still Alice.
Sweeney Todd
★★★★★ A cut above:
Captivate Theatre’s revival of last year’s Fringe production of Sweeney Todd has matured over the months, and is a must-see as it reaches the Brunton Theatre.
Spamalot!

Staged with great exuberance by the Musselburgh Amateur Musical Association, Spamalot! – at the Brunton to Saturday – is an infectiously joyful affair.

Musselburgh Amateur Musical Association brings a little bit of magic to the stage at the Brunton Theatre with its 2017 Revue.
