Barefoot in the Park

Barefoot in the Park

★★★☆☆  Diligent

The Edinburgh Makars return to the Hepburn Suite at the Royal Scots Club with Barefoot in the Park. Their production of Neil Simon’s comedy is solid and well crafted, but real comic punch comes inconsistently.

Prescription For Murder

Prescription For Murder

★★★☆☆ Pleasing:

Prescription For Murder, from the Edinburgh Makars at the Church Hill Theatre, is one of those odd English crime dramas that provide more reassurance than apprehension.

Oedipus & Hands Across the Sea

Oedipus & Hands Across the Sea

★★★★☆   Double Dose:

Congratulations to which ever member of the Edinburgh Makars thought of staging Sophocles’ bloody Oedipus in a seemingly incongruous double bill with a Noel Coward one-act farce. Truth is, the incongruity works.

Good Things

Good Things

★★★☆☆ Heartfelt:
There are plenty of Good Things in the Makars’ production of Liz Lochhead’s play of that name, in a production that is solid if not spectacular.

The Game’s Afoot

The Game’s Afoot

✭✭✭✩✩ Elementary but entertaining:
There is solid, well-crafted entertainment in The Edinburgh Makars’ production of The Game’s Afoot or Holmes For The Holidays. Genuine thrills and spills are in short supply, but great pains have been taken to make a rewarding whole.

Relatively Speaking

Relatively Speaking

✭✭✭✩✩ Relatively successful
Slick, humorous and effective, the Edinburgh Makars’ production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Relatively Speaking can be counted as a success even if it never quite manages to locate the darker streak that characterises his work.

Æ Review – Agatha Christie’s The Hollow

★★☆☆☆

There is nothing sleepy about the Hollow to which the Angkatells have retired in this country house weekend murder mystery from the Makars, which is at Adam House until Saturday.
