Wait ends for Godot at CATS

The Lyceum’s production of Waiting for Godot has won the Best Production award at this year’s Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland.

The production, which featured Brian Cox, Bill Paterson, John Bett and Benny Young together with a number of members of the Lyceum Youth Company, also won best ensemble.

It was the showpiece opener to the Lyceum’s theatre company’s fiftieth anniversary season (review), which was also its director, Mark Thomson’s, last season in his 13 year tenure as the theatre’s artistic director.

Uncanny Valley, by Rob Drummond, which was commissioned by the Edinburgh International Science Festival, and staged at Summerhall, won best production for children and young people (review).

Drummond, who is a Traverse Associate Artist, will be appearing at the Traverse during this year’s fringe in his new play In Fidelity.

The cast, band, MD Martin Lowe and sound designer Mike Walker of Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, won the Best Music and Sound award.

First seen at the Traverse at the fringe of 2015 (review), Lee Hall’s adaptation of Alan Warner’s The Sopranos directed by Vicky Featherstone in a National Theatre of Scotland co production with Live Theatre, was a huge hit and is currently on international tour.

Two co-productions from the Glasgow Citizens won the remaining six awards.

The first of these was the Edinburgh International Festival co-production of Lanark, A Life in Three Acts, seen at the Lyceum during the 2015 EIF (review).

Sandy Grierson won his second Best Male Performance CATS, for his work in the title role. Laura Hopkins (designer), Nigel Edwards (lighting designer) and Simon Wainwright (video artist), took the Best Design award. And it also won best technical presentation.

Zinnie Harris, another associate artist with the Traverse, won best new play, for This Restless House, her adaptation of Aeschylus’ great trilogy, The Oresteia, with Pauline Knowles winning the Best Female Performance award for her portrayal of Clytemnestra.

The Citz co-pro with the NTS also won its director Dominic Hill his sixth Best Director CATS.

Muriel Romanes was also presented with a CATS Whiskers award at the ceremony, which took place at the Royal Lyceum. Full details here: Artist plea at CATS.
