Open amateur auditions and Creatives announced

Edinburgh Music Theatre will be holding open company auditions on Wednesday 23 September 2015 for next March’s production of The Producers.

The evening, running 7-10pm, will be a welcome night and general company casting session. Individual auditions for the principal and named roles will take place on Saturday 3 October with any call-backs on Sunday 4 October.

The company has also announced that the creative team for the show will be led by director Joel Mason with Linda Stewart as musical director and choreography by Rebecca Wallace.

Mel Brookes’ show is based on his own Academy Award-winning movie. It follows New York producer Max Bialystock who, impoverished by a string of flops, recruits timid accountant Leo Bloom to help him pull off Broadway’s greatest scam.

Their aim? To produce Springtime for Hitler, the worst show ever and a guaranteed flop, then run away with the millions of dollars invested in it by the theatre angels Max has been busy charming. But they soon learn that show business can kick you in the teeth.

The show received its amateur premiere in Edinburgh at the Church Hill Theatre in 2012 from MGA productions (reviewed here). The professional tour was last here in March at the Festival Theatre and is reviewed here.

EMT’s auditions will take place at Barclay Viewforth Church Hall, 1 Wright’s Houses. Auditionees should be prepared to learn a dance and a musical number during this session which you will then perform in small groups for the production team as an audition for a place in the Company.

They may also be asked to learn a song from the show during the evening and sing in small groups.

Assuming successful acceptance into the company, individual auditions for principal and named roles will take place on Saturday 3rd October. For this, auditionees should prepare a monologue and a song. Song choice should include notes at the very top of the range and must be sung to a piano accompaniment, they will also be asked to read from the script.

Audition slots between 10am and 5pm will be available on Saturday. Auditionees will be able secure a slot at the Wednesday welcome night, pending confirmation that they have been successful in gaining a place in the company.

Rehearsals will take place in the Barclay Church Hall, Wednesday evenings 7-10pm and Saturday mornings.
