The Traverse’s artistic director, Dominic Hill, has directed Chekhov’s The Seagull for BBC Radio 3, with Siobhan Redmond and Paul Higgins heading up a cast of leading Scottish actors.

The new production uses a new Stuart Paterson adaptation for the radio, of the first ever English translation by George Calderon in 1909. It is broadcast on Sunday 31 January as the penultimate offering in BBC Radio’s Chekhov at 150 Season.

Siobhan Redmond plays famous actress Irina Arkadina who arrives to spend the summer on her brother Sorin’s country estate. Paul Higgins plays her literary lover, Trigorin.

In part a tragic play about eternally unhappy people, Chekhov described The Seagull as “a comedy in four acts”, poking fun at human folly. All the characters are dissatisfied with their lives. Some desire love, some yearn for success, some crave artistic genius, but no one ever seems to attain happiness.

The new production is broadcast on Sunday 31 January at 8pm on Radio 3 and will be available using the online listen-again function for seven days.
