VPT Goes Fringe Tastic
Village Pub Theatre in funds drive for #EdFringe15
Edinburgh’s practitioner-run Village Pub Theatre is raising the stakes as it nears the two thirds mark in its efforts to crowd-fund a 72-play, two week run at this year’s fringe.
The year-round company will be presenting its low-fi, script-in hand readings of short new plays in the back room of The Village Pub, Leith, as part of the fringe for the first time this August.
VPT has, at the time of writing, got £1,935 pledged in its Kickstarter campaign to raise £3,000 to help pay for the venue license, daily rates for actors and directors and to publicise the shows. The campaign has nine days to run, finishing on Thursday 2 July.
This week’s special fund-raising effort is a pub quiz (of course) at The Village, 16 South Fort Street, on Wednesday 24 June. There will be special rounds written by the VPT playwrights covering music, film, Leith and a trivia round on the wonder of Bill Murray.
Teams of up to five, £5 entry per person, are welcome. There is also a seriously outrageous list of raffle prizes – ranging from a rare Scottish Malt Whisky Society malt, to an AirBnB stay, via scripts, tickets to the Voice Thief and a VPT Free Cake Badge.
Speaking of the step up to the fringe, playwright James Ley, who helped set up the VPT with a group of fellow writers and artists said: “We know our venue is off the beaten track, but we see that as part of the charm.

“We think it’s about time that the Fringe spread out from the high cost, crowded venues in the city centre and brought audiences to a more diverse, real and edgy space, like our home in The Village on South Fort Street, Leith.

“We also think we’re part of a new wave of home grown theatre worth shouting about and we want to give audiences the opportunity to share in some of the fun we have year round in Leith.”
The company say that they want to give a non-Edinburgh audience a chance to experience the atmosphere and energy of the unique venue and the VPT directing style, led by Artistic Director Caitlin Skinner, who has just finished a stint as assistant director on the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of The Driver’s Seat.
With a diverse range of writing genres on offer, the company are aware that they owe much to the energy and creativity of the growing troop of actors who have been instrumental in developing VPT, drawing a regular audience and creating a unique style and way of presenting theatre.
