EMT hold welcome event and open auditions for Sweet Charity

Edinburgh Music Theatre is holding a combined welcome event and open company auditions for its Spring 2019 production of the Bob Fosse musical Sweet Charity.

The show explores the chaotic love life of hopelessly romantic dance hall hostess, Charity Hope Valentine, often to comically unfortunate effect. It has music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon and was originally directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse.

EMT’s welcome evening is taking place on Wednesday 19 September at Barclay Viewforth Church Hall at 7pm. It will include a dance workshop and a song-learning session as well as an opportunity to meet the show’s creatives.

There will also be auditions for new company members, who will be asked to sing the song which they have learned on the night.

Auditions for Principal Featured roles in the show will take place on Saturday 22 and Wednesday 26 September, with call-backs on Saturday 29.

Creative team

Direction of the show is by Louise Sables who joined EMT as a performer during the 2017 run of Fiddler on the Roof and the Fringe shows that year before taking on the role of director this year’s production of Guys and Dolls.

Choreography will be by Morgan Scott who joined the EMT team as choreographer for this summer’s Fringe shows and will now be putting the cast through their paces as they learn Fosse style dance routines.

Matthew Brown and Simon Lowe are also returning to the company as Musical Directors, after their success with Guys and Dolls.

Opening to critical acclaim in 1966, Sweet Charity’s inaugural Broadway run totalled 608 performances, securing 9 Tony nominations and earning Fosse a Tony Award for best choreography. The bitter-sweet comic musical also boasts a number of highly successful Broadway and West End revivals and was filmed in 1969 with Shirley MacLaine.

It features such well known musical numbers as Big Spender, If They Could See Me Now and the seemingly random yet unquestionably mesmerising Rhythm Of Life. EMT say that they hope that their production will leave a lasting impression on their audiences long after the final curtain comes down.

EMT was formed in 1982 and is a charitable company managed by a Board of Directors. It aims to stage musical theatre performances “of the highest standard” through commitment, dedication, hard work and talent and by working with professional directors, choreographers and musical directors.

Recent EMT shows include four star productions of Guys and Dolls (2018) and Fiddler on The Roof (2017) at the King’s Theatre. Auditions are open to everyone over the age of 18.
