Catherine Wheels’ White gets Easter streaming

Catherine Wheels are to live stream Any Manley’s smash hit children’s theatre play White for free on YouTube over the Easter weekend, Friday 10 – Monday 13 April 2020.

The company will stream a live recording of the 2019 production of the play, with performers Ian Cameron and Michael Dylan. It will also be making White: The App, a digital toy for children aged 2-4 years, free to download via the App store.

The 35 minute play will get three streams a day – 11am, 2pm and 4pm GMT – and will be available to start streaming for up to 40 minutes afterwards. This performance was filmed in Shanghai at The ASK (Art Space For Kids) in 2019.

White follows friends, Cotton and Wrinkle, who look after the birdhouses and make sure the eggs stay safe in a world that is bright, ordered and very, very white. But high in the trees, all is not white. Colour appears. First red, then yellow, then blue. Our review of the 2015 tour is here: ★★★★★ Perfect rainbow.

Directed by Catherine Wheels’ artistic director Gill Robertson, with inventive design by Shona Reppe lit by Craig Fleming and with music by Danny Krass, White is a playful, highly visual show for young children – a perfect theatre experience for grownups and young children to enjoy together.

Gill Robertson said: “We are delighted that we are able to share this lovely film version of White. It feels like the right time to share this special show with families around the world and also offer the White app, which is a beautiful, quirky and engrossing game for wee ones.

“I love the idea of families watching it together, wherever they are.”

The show was originally created in 2010 by the Musselburgh-based Catherine Wheels and had its premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe that year with Andy Manley and Ian Cameron playing Cotton and Wrinkle.

As a play without any spoken dialogue, White is perfect for international audiences and has subsequently toured to Australia, Asia, Europe and North America, playing to combined audiences of over 98,000 people. Along the way it has won seven awards including a Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland for Best Show for Children & Young People and a TMA Theatre Award.

Accompanying the production, is White: The App, a digital toy for children aged 2-4 years, and now made free to download via the App store, with thanks to its developers, the East-Lothian based Hippotrix. Our news story of the launch of the app is here: ‘Appy times for White iPad App.

Parents and carers are encouraged to download the app to continue the fun after the show. White: The App is available to download here: apps.apple.com.
