#ThouArtViable launch fundraising Xmas Cards

A group of Scotland-based theatre professionals have pooled resources under the name of Thou Art Viable to release a limited run of charity festive cards and are inviting other artists to take part.

The subversive sets come in two varieties, the “Hustle” and the “Joy” six packs – the latter guarantees not to have any images of Boris Johnson.

They are released as Capital Theatres announces a card featuring Edinburgh Artist Jennifer Thomson’s painting of the King’s Theatre during panto season.

Some of the images used in the #ThouAreViable cards (clockwise from top left): Ross Napier x 2, Ella Orleans, Danny Clives, Miriam Atwood, Ali McGregor, Kat Radeva and Danny Clives.

The Thou Art Viable cards are designed by company director and artist Kat Radeva, graphic designer Ross Napier, Jazz singer and painter Ali McGregor, Scottish Album of the Year Award nominated singer-songwriter Ela Orleans and comedian and illustrator Danny Clives. They are on sale from today, Wednesday 11 November 2020.

Thou Art Viable was dreamed up by theatre publicists: Edinburgh-based Miriam Atwood and Michelle Mangan and Glasgow-based Sharon McHendry. The idea came when someone joked on Whatsapp that anyone designing a festive card saying it’s all cancelled would make a mint.

The trio are not actually “making a mint”, however. Once all artists are paid, profits will be donated to #allofus and #excludeduk.

specialists

They say: “We quite simply saw this as a chance to put our story back out there – to talk up the number of specialists in our industry who have had nine months without the joy, hustle and madness of their day jobs.

“Looking around we came full circle – we have time to stuff envelopes and we know artists who we know would have time to contribute artworks. This is not us diversifying, this is us saying ‘Thou Art Viable’.”

Capital Theatres’ 2020 Christmas Card by Jennifer Thomson: the King’s Theatre in Panto Season

The Capital Theatres card is from a painting by Jennifer Thomson, known for her images of Edinburgh and the East Neuk of Fife.

Appropriately for a card commemorating the King’s panto, she says her aim as an artist is to capture the happy moments in life. The peaceful, unassuming times when everything just feels right with the world. A sense of love and being connected – with family, friends and our surroundings.
