Christmas Carol Goes Wrong
★★★★☆ Tight
Mischief Theatre go back to basics in their adaptation for the stage of the 2017 smash hit TV show, Christmas Carol Goes Wrong at the Festival Theatre to Sunday. And their greatest creation, the Cornley Drama Society, are all the better for it.
The Seagull
★★★☆☆ Well crafted
The Seagull, from EUTC at the Bedlam until Sunday, is a fastidious, even reverential production that largely succeeds but does sometimes struggle to find its own identity.
Kiss Me, Kate
★★★★☆ Chef’s kiss
Kiss Me, Kate, from the Edinburgh University Footlights, is a strikingly ambitious production. Not every element succeeds equally, but some aspects are excellent, and all of it entertains.
Romeo and Juliet
★★★☆☆ Expansive
Romeo and Juliet, from the Edinburgh University Shakespeare Company at the Pleasance, is a production on a grand scale. There is much about it that is praiseworthy, but in the end its ambition does prove a disadvantage.
The Raft of the Crab
★★★★☆ Inventively emotional
The Raft of the Crab, at the Studio Theatre for one performance only as part of Manipulate, is an engaging, human and wonderfully performed piece from Scotland-based Ninon Noiret, detailing her diagnosis of cancer, her treatment and recovery.
Size Matters
★★★☆☆ Whimsical
Size Matters, at the Traverse as part of the Manipulate festival, is an inventive if uneven production.
FRIENDS! The Musical Parody
★★☆☆☆ Muddled
FRIENDS! The Musical Parody, at the Edinburgh Playhouse through Saturday, is a meta-episode covering the ten-year arc of the iconic 90’s TV show about the lives and loves of six young adults in Manhattan.
The History Boys
★★★★☆ Intelligent
Energy, fine acting and a great deal of thought characterise The History Boys at the Bedlam, where it runs through to Saturday.
