What’s on Edinburgh’s stages this week?
There is not a huge amount, it must be said. Unless you are reading this at the beginning of the week, when there are a couple of interesting events on offer.
The Effect
★★★★☆ Compellingly performed
The Effect by Northern Assignment, upstairs at Assembly Roxy as part of a series of one-nighters in Edinburgh and Glasgow, is an intelligent production, staged with care and performed with distinction.
The Burns Project
★★★★☆ Nuanced
The Burns Project, by James Clements (in collaboration with the National Trust for Scotland) at the Lyceum, is an engaging, beautifully performed piece full of both vitality and subtlety.
The Table
★★★★☆ Questioning
Set out for a short run at the Traverse, Lung Ha’s The Table is a curious hybrid of immersive theatre, dance, spoken word and imagery. A hybrid that draws you in and leaves you asking more.
Crawling your way back to Absurdism, Baby
Absurdist play Crawl for Pianodrome
Salvador Kent brings Crawl, a piece of absurdist theatre by German writer Till Schindler to the Pianodrome Bruntsfield next week. Ahead of the performances on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 June, Kent reflects on what on earth Absurdist Theatre means in 21st century Edinburgh. Or whether is even has meaning at all.
Book Fest in Performance
BookFest: Booking opens Thurs 28 June.
The Edinburgh International Book Festival, now firmly established at the Edinburgh Futures Institute in Lauriston Place, has its usual quota of performance and theatre-related events in 2026.
The Karate Kid – The Musical
★★★☆☆ Nostalgic
The Karate Kid – The Musical at the Festival Theatre is one of those shows that is touring ‘ahead of its West End debut’. While there are many things to like about the production, there are also reasons to suspect that a long London run is unlikely.
Lyceum at Home on Stage
★★★★☆ Inviting
The Lyceum’s At Home on Stage provides an affecting series of performances, losing a little when divorced from their original settings, but convincing nevertheless.

It’s a bit of a hodgepodge of a week this, although there is some highly recommended stuff on offer, including pop-up Opera, pop-up Burns a couple of EdFringe previews some Karate chops and a whole lot of illusion…
Inexperience
★★★★☆ Human
Inexperience, the new play by Douglas Maxwell at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre Studio, is a stimulating production full of life and emotion.
