Week-long creative labs – first deadline looming

Assembly Roxy is inviting artists, makers and freelancers into the building to take part in three Creative Labs, each for one week only, with applications for the first lab due this Monday, 16 November 2020.

This is a tried and tested model of participation, inspired by work at the Tron in Glasgow, in which an artist/artists take over the building for a week – to “come and play and develop a piece of work or practice”.

The labs are supported financially by the Scottish Government’s Performing Arts Venue Relief Fund and each will attract a budget of £3,000.

This first lab is expected to take place some time before the end of the year, although this is flexible to ensure compliance with Government guidance and to support the successful applicant’s needs.

The remaining labs will take place between January and March 2021 – with a further call out due to follow for those.

Applications are open to any performance specialism, but the Roxy says that it will welcome those with a particular emphasis on comedy (this could include sketch, stand-up or theatre), circus and/or devised work as well as those that are designer led.

Each lab has a budget of £3,000 to support artist fees; materials and equipment; and documentation and sharing of work.

in-house team

As well as space, participants will have access to the Roxy and Assembly Festival’s in-house team – including technical, producing and development advice – to support the development of work both during the lab and for its future.

The Labs will also support international collaboration and mentoring from producers and performers around the world.

Each Lab will conclude with a sharing of some kind, depending on ongoing restrictions and the needs of the project; this might be streamed, documented, invited audience or a hybrid of these.

Further details and an application form are available on the Roxy website here: www.assemblyfestival.com. Deadline for applications for the first Lab is 5pm, Monday 16 November 2020.
