Church Hill Theatre
The Drowsy Chaperone
★★★☆☆ Strong performances
Edinburgh Music Theatre’s post-pandemic return at the Church Hill Theatre is The Drowsy Chaperone, a show which began life as a collection of songs presented to comedian and writer Bob Martin and his fiancée as a wedding present.
Men Should Weep
★★★★☆ Timely
Seemingly endlessly delayed by Covid, Edinburgh People’s Theatre’s production of Men Should Weep finally takes to the Church Hill stage. The end result is carefully observed and has considerable emotional power.
Legally Blonde – The Musical
★★★★☆ Sugar rush
Radiating the sheer enjoyment of being back in a theatre, Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group’s production of Legally Blonde-The Musical is huge in scale, excellently put together, and full of sugary goodness.
The Hollow
★★★☆☆ Stately:
Huge care and attention has gone into the staging of Threepenny Theatricals’ version of Agatha Christie’s The Hollow. That care, however, does mean that there is a definite absence of energy in a production that never outstays its welcome but frequently threatens to.
Hairspray
★★★★☆ Energetic:
The Balerno Theatre Company go back to Baltimore in the swinging 60s for their uplifting and energetic production of Hairspray at the Church Hill Theatre to Saturday.
Made in Dagenham
★★★★☆ Up-standing:
As the political stew bubbles over the edges of the Westminster cauldron, Allegro’s big and bold production of Made in Dagenham reminds us of a time when politics was a lot more simple – and the issues were even more fundamental.
Showcase 2019
★★★★☆ Melodic juggernaut:
Showcase 2019 at the Church Hill Theatre is an object lesson in how to ring the changes on a familiar formula and keep the result delightfully fresh.
