Cheeyang Ng brings Legendary to Underbelly, Bristo Square for the whole Fringe in a life-altering communal experience.
Weaving together Chinese mythology and personal history, Ng takes the audience on a sweeping journey of their life, casting themself in the stories of their childhood as they reckon with diaspora, being trans, and the responsibilities of being a descendant.

The set is minimal but powerful, framed by items that bring about a sense of nostalgia: the centre of the set holds an old light projector with hand-written notes cast upon the back wall, and sunshine-yellow balloons line the lip of the stage.
Between the boundaries are three tables with props, each representing a different member of Ng’s family, each an island in sight as Ng (and the audience) traverse the vastness between. The whole environment takes on a personal quality, as though the audience is congregating in a shared childhood home or bedroom.
As with some Fringe shows, Legendary is immersive: the audience is invited to participate in this journey of self-reflection as voices, memories, and stories meld with Ng’s. At times as the ocean of memories Ng sails upon, at times as oneself, at times as one’s inner child, and always a collective legendary voice.
more than a musical
Cheeyang is a visionary, a brilliant writer, and a gifted storyteller, sharing their heart and their music and their life with vulnerability and strength. Legendary is more than a musical; it’s a hug, it’s a spiritual journey, it’s a moment with your younger self, it’s an outstretched hand in a moment of need. It will move you to tears with its utter outpouring of love.
Every trans person, every immigrant (especially Asian immigrants), every person who is struggling to find their role in the story of their life: do not let this month pass you by without a visit to this show.
