Over 195 shows Made in Edinburgh
The Edinburgh Fringe of 2026 boasts 195 theatrical productions that are made in Edinburgh, from the theatre, musicals, opera, dance, cabaret and children’s theatre sections.
That might be a significant reduction from last year’s bumper 253 productions, but is a reasonable increase on previous years. And slightly more than the whole of the Fringe in 1973, when 105 companies put on 183 productions.
The year-on-year reduction is partly because of a change of reporting from the EdFringe website, but also because there is a significantly reduced number of entries from the Cabaret and Comedy sections. The Theatre and Musical Theatre sections are both still near last year’s peak.
In numbers
There are 131 different productions in the theatre section – with a few more in the section of productions for children and young people. A slight reduction on last year’s 138, but still enough to break them up for listings purposes.
By far the largest number are in the catch-all Grassroots Theatre section, with 83 different plays on offer. There are a further 23 in the Amateur Theatre section, where there are some really interesting offerings. There are 15 student and youth theatre productions and 10 from professional and funded companies.
As for Musicals and Opera, the ever-growing Captivate Theatre and the constant presence of Edinburgh Little Theatre and Sound Events Scotland at Braw Venues, ensure that there are a total of 37 different productions on offer.
There are 13 shows in the Children’s section, and another 13 which come under the aegis of Cabaret, Comedy, Dance or Spoken Word. Overall, it shows that theatre and performance in Edinburgh is not just alive, but still very much kicking above its weight.
At All Edinburgh Theatre our mission is to seek out shows made in the city, list them and review them, if we possibly can. Our team of reviewers will be attempting to cover every single one of the productions listed on the website.
