Strong showing in noms for annual theatre awards
Edinburgh companies and festivals make a strong showing in the shortlist for the 2016 Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland, announced today, Monday 16 May.
The shortlist features 20 different productions, nominated across ten categories. A full dozen productions have a strong Edinburgh connection, thanks to the large number of co-productions recognised.

The Traverse and the Lyceum are both involved with four productions, Catherine Wheels and the Science Festival with two each and Edinburgh-based company Vision Mechanics has one show nominated in its own right.
However the Glasgow Citizens comes away a clear leader in terms of the number of nods it receives, with a total of twelve nominations for four productions, including five for the recent This Restless House and five for Lanark: A Life in Three Acts, its co-production with the Edinburgh International Festival.
Adapted by the Lyceum’s recently appointed artistic director David Greig from Alasdair Gray’s novel, Lanark: A Life in Three Acts premiered at the Lyceum last August during the Festival.
In its 50th anniversary year, the Lyceum Theatre company has been nominated for only two productions in its own right. Waiting for Godot earned a nod for the ensemble of actors Brian Cox, Bill Paterson, John Bett and Benny Young.
Best production
Mark Thomson is nominated for best director while the design team of Michael Taylor and lighting designer Mark Doubleday get a nod for their work, while the production is in the running for best production.

In The Iliad, Emmanuella Cole has been nominated for her performance as Hera, queen of the gods.
Also playing at the Lyceum last year, the National Theatre of Scotland’s adaptation of The Driver’s Seat by Muriel Spark, has been given a nod for technical presentation.
Round the corner, the Traverse is mentioned in its own right for Right Now, with a nod going to Maureen Beattie. It was also involved with two A Play, A Pie and A Pint productions Linda Duncan McLaughlin’s Descent and Anita Vettesse’s Ring Road.
It was also the venue for the National Theatre of Scotland’s produciton of Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, which gets nods for the ensemble, the music and overall best production.
Science Festival
Children’s theatre specialists, Catherine Wheels, has involvement with two shows. It is a co-producer of Shona Reppe’s Magic Sho, and staged its own production of Lost At Sea during the Science Festival.

The Science Festival’s involvement stretches to commissioning the play in the first place. The second production it is involved with is Rob Drummond’s Uncanny Valley.
Now in its 14th year, the CATS are awarded by the theatre critics of Scotland to celebrate the best Scottish theatre achievements in the theatre year May to April. This year there were 179 eligible productions, with 100 eligible for the Best New Play award and 18 for the work for the Children and Young People Award.
