Capital Theatres “cancels or postpones” all March & April shows

Capital Theatres, which runs the King’s, the Festival and the Studio theatres, has announced that it is cancelling or postponing all performances at the three venues in March and April 2020.

This latest response to the Covid-19 – or coronavirus – pandemic comes into effect from 12 noon on Monday March 2020.

The news follows advice from the Scottish Government that events involving more than 500 people should not take place, with effect from Monday 16 March 2020. This applies to mass events across all sectors – including sporting events, cultural events, and religious gatherings.

Customers who have tickets for performances during March and April will automatically receive a full refund over the coming weeks, according to a statement from Capital Theatres.

The statement continues: “Our box office staff will contact customers directly if there are any issues, please bear with us as we work through the refund process at this challenging time.

“We are currently working to reschedule cancelled performances to dates in the autumn and will keep all customers up-to-date as quickly as possible regarding this.”

Patience, Shrek off

The news will have an immediate effect on EdGAS, the Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society, which had been going to stage Patience at the King’s Theatre this week, running from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 March.

The other Edinburgh amateur company immediately effected will be the Bohemians, who were also due to play at the King’s, staging Shrek The Musical there next week from Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 March.

The Bohemians have issued a statement on their Facebook page confirming that Shrek has been postponed – they emphasise it is not cancelled – and that they “cannot wait to show you our incredible show at some point in the near future”.

As of 11am, Monday 16 March, no other Edinburgh theatre had issued such a blanket notice.
