It’s Edinburgh’s Fringe

Largest ever Edinburgh presence at EdFringe

EXCLUSIVE

Edinburgh companies will be staging 253 shows at EdFringe 2025. That is 35% more than a year ago, double the number in 2018 and enough to make up the whole Fringe of 1974.

And All Edinburgh Theatre will once again be listing all the Made in Edinburgh shows, from all sides of the theatrical coin: professional and amateur; student and youth; and a huge number of shows put on by grassroots companies.

EPT were at the first ever Fringe, when there were only eight productions… They return this year with a fresh production of their hit Hatches Matches and Dispatches.

This is just productions of a theatrical bent, too, the majority from the Theatre section. But with a good number of musicals, cabaret shows and productions for children. There are dance performances, cabaret and even a few choice items from the comedy section – but no standup.

All staged by companies and individuals who live and work in and around the city. Although it is hard to know how well the recent trend of non-Scottish companies using local performers with their own creatives is represented.

Even though we don’t include stand-up comedy, this still represents more companies than performed at the 1977 Fringe when there were just 194 companies at the Fringe altogether. Those 194 did put on 416 productions, however.

In numbers

In terms of the absolute number of shows, this year’s Made in Edinburgh Fringe is actually just short of the 1974 Fringe, when 131 companies put on 260 productions – and it is loads bigger than 1973, when 105 companies put on 183 productions.

There are 138 Made in Edinburgh productions in the Theatre section. So many that we have had to break our listings up into Professional (16), Youth & Student (19), Grassroots (88) and Amateur (15) companies.

Around the genres, there are 35 Musicals and Opera productions – including many from young companies such as Captivate – and another 35 shows pulled from the Cabaret and Variety section of the programme.

There are 22 shows specifically for children, 16 shows from the dance section, five from Spoken Word and three from the comedy section.

Here are the links to the eight listings pages:

We are also proud to work with EPAD to produce and publish their annual listing of shows “created, performed or produced by Edinburgh’s theatre professionals” which is here.
