Legally Blonde is given a first-class treatment by Captivate Theatre at Edinburgh Academy for this summer’s fringe in a splendid production which runs only to the 12th.
A superb community cast give it their all and come out with a phenomenal result which is energetic and fun from start to finish.

Elle Woods (played by Elsie Watson alternating with Niamh Osborne) is a Malibu blonde, with high hopes of marrying her long-term Ivy-league bound boyfriend Warner (Gordon Stackhouse). Hopes of a proposal are dashed as he heads to Harvard to be ‘serious’.
In the title role, Watson is magnetic and nuanced – her voice is powerful and well suited to the many numbers she belts out. Her acting is as strong as her singing and she wins hearts and minds throughout.
a moral tale
Similarly, Stackhouse is highly entertaining as the smarmy Warner, it’s a one dimensional role but he does a lot with it.
The fun really beings though, when they decamp to Harvard and the brilliant ensemble lead us through a moral tale of good vs bad and blondes finding their brains, as Elle gets to discover she is so much more than she realised.

The Delta Nu girl gang (Olivia Eccles, Mizuki Shuzenji and Juliet Gentle) provide much fun – from their cheerleading application essay to their ‘Greek chorus’ – to help Elle through her tough bits. The trio bring a real fizz of energy and are a joy to watch.
Captivate have some entirely youth casts, but this is more of a mix with young adult and adult cast is required for the show’s more grown-up themes.
intimidating
Rory Maclean as the stern law professor Callahan is a capable actor and is suitably intimidating while Bailey Easton as the modest and determined Emmett is affable and charming as the underdog. Kara Chalmers completes the Harvard cliches as the snotty new girlfriend Viv.

Paulette, Elle’s manicurist and confidente is a fantastic role, with many of the show’s funniest lines and a quirky character. Speff Strachan has so much fun with this, a comedic heroine with a heart of gold and a penchant for the Irish. She’s a belter, and Ewan Robertson’s turn as Kyle the hunky delivery guy, gets the best audience reaction at every appearance.
exuberant
The second half is given a boost with Emma Clarkson’s exuberant turn as Brooke Wyndham, the fitness empire builder and would-be murderer, skipping and whipping her way across the stage. The ensemble performance throughout is eye-wateringly energetic, but Whipped Into Shape is a real highlight.

There’s no one in this cast who doesn’t give it 110% which is a huge credit to director and choreographer Colum Findlay. Musical Director Fraser Hume (and his ten-strong band) hold together a production which easily stands up against any professional production.
This is a Legally Blonde which is endearing, funny, energetic and entertaining – all the things you want from such a show – definitely worth adding to your list before it disappears on August 12.
