What’s on Edinburgh’s stages this week?
A week of big theatre, this with plenty to offer on all levels of the professional touring circuits, a great grassroots show, two works in preview and, of course, that “revolting” musical.
The big commercial show is Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts, the 2010 play by original Morse scriptwriter, with Tom Chambers as Morse (ends Sat: tickets). “The programme’s many fans will be very pleased,” says Æ’s critic.
The big number on the non-commercial circuit is Nicole Cooper’s CATS award-winning turn as Medea from Bard in the Botanics at the Traverse (Fri/Sat: tickets). Limited tickets remain for Sat only: be quick, it’s brilliant.
The big play is Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead from new grassroots outfit Gutter Theatre at Assembly Roxy (Wed – Sun: tickets). If you miss this one, the Makars have a production at the Church Hill in April (tickets).
There are two big previews. The first is a long-range effort from the brilliant Creative Electric who have a nightclub-set Medusa at Summerhall (Fri-Sun: tickets) ahead of “BIG PLANS” for the show in 2027.
The second show in preview is One Day – the Musical at the Lyceum (previews to Mar 10, run ends Apr 19: tickets). The unofficial message from those who have seen early previews is “run – don’t walk” – for tickets.
They don’t come much bigger than Matilda the Musical, parking at the Playhouse for three weeks (ends Sun 22 Mar: tickets). Surely, everyone needs to get a little bit naughty…
To celebrate International Women’s Day, Scylla’s Bite have a special Bite Night with five WIPs and a panel Q&A with top women in the Scottish theatre industry at Augustine United Church (Sun: tickets).
And finally, Class Act returns to the Traverse, with short scripts from young people at Edinburgh’s high schools (Wed/Thur: tickets)
