What is on Edinburgh’s stages this week?

It’s a big week, with two major local companies putting on theatre, a five star hit at the Lyceum, a new musical at the Pianodrome, a touring scarer at the Playhouse, Scottish Opera’s in town and the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival opens. Phew!

A group of friends who attend a Yorkshire Women’s Institute are inspired by a tragedy to pose for a charity calendar with a difference – no more photos of Wharfedale bridges or Norman churches for them. Overcoming their initial reserve, the friends drop their dressing gowns to do their version of a glamour calendar, their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements. The Marriage of Figaro (Scottish Opera)

Sir Thomas Allen revives his much-loved production of Mozart’s unstoppable masterpiece. Simon Higlett’s sumptuous designs provide the backdrop for a comedy of social revolution and subversion that is as relevant today as ever, and this time sung in English.  Book here.

1960. The news that Elvis Presley will touch down in Scotland on his way home from National Service in Germany somehow gets out, so Tony, Jean, and Sylvia commandeer a car and head North, hoping to catch a glimpse of their hero. Perfect Dead Girls

A gruesome yet tender celebration of the joys and paranoias of girlhood. In a purgatory plastered with graffiti, glitter, and teenage angst, two young girls find themselves trapped after their sudden deaths only to discover that they are not alone: something else is here, watching them, deciding who gets to leave and who gets left behind. Mirkids (EICF)

Mirkids is a feast for the eyes and the imagination. The audience lies on the stage around a cylindrical structure, gazing at a suspended mirror and glimpsing dancers reflected on its surface. Here an arm, there a leg, disconnected and multiplied. In sync, with a geometric rhythm, body parts create mesmerising shapes like the vibrant patterns of a kaleidoscope: symmetrical, fluid, enigmatic and forever-changing. Tickets and details.
